Gaining speed

The front page shows what is big. This shows what is becoming big: stories ranked by how many publishers have covered them for the first time in the last 6 hours, against how many had already. A story going from two newsrooms to eight outranks one going from twenty to twenty-six.

How this is counted

For each live story we take every publisher's first article on it. Publishers whose first article is within the last 6 hours are new arrivals; the rest had it already. Stories with fewer than 2 new arrivals are left out. The order is new arrivals divided by the square root of the earlier count plus one, so breadth of new interest counts more than sheer size.
